Phillip Island Classic 2007 -
A broken board is no way to begin a competition :
At the Phillip Island Classic of 2007, Stan managed to break his board on the very first wave of his very first heat. Not such a good way to start a competition and certainly no way was this planned for.
The shore break at Flynns on the Saturday was possibly the most exciting part of the wave and could be the place to set yourself aside from the pack. Stan went for it showing total comittment and the landing was there. Whether it was a little dry on the sandy bottom or the collapse of the lip, the landing was just too heavy and the board was in two peices. Standing ankle deep in the shore break with half a board on the end of the leggie " There goes my comp " all positive thoughts for the comp or the for the heat vanished in an instant. Clearly Stan had no idea what to do next and the usual cheery face had a sad blank expression.
Red to the rescue with his competition board in hand , " Here Stan , use my board , don't hold back , just go for it ". No time to think and off with the leggie and handed Red the half board , the other half was flopping about the water line, and back out into the water as fast as possible to complete the Heat. On an unknown board and a head full " broken board " Stan managed to survive Heat 1.
Back on the beach after the completion of Heat 1 was a chance to look at the damage and contemplate the consequences for the rest of the competition. Incredibly generous of Red to give his competition board unconditionaly to a mate like this but that's an example of the type of guy he is. What if Red and Stan were to land in the same heat latter on. Can we find another spare board before Heat 2 and for the rest of the competition.

As if to plan Stump (Andrew Stump) arrived at Flynns with a freshly made small wave board in hand. Obviously Stump had no idea that there was a broken board as had planned to be at the Philip Island Classic for a look at current kneeboard trends and surfing styles to fold back into his kneeboard shaping development. Bringing the new board , that had been in the works over the past few months , to the event was just a matter of convenience and in the off chance that the conditions were suited might possibility be of use, even if a little green.

Just the image of Stump walking along the beach with board in hand was enough to put the smile back on Stan's face and a quick eye over the new board made the smile grew even larger. The new board was going to be used no matter what , so the the FCS fins were swapped from the broken board and with a bit of wax and the new board was ready for Heat 2.

Not long after, Sash arrived at the beach and spotted the broken board..
" Stan, is that your board ... what happenned to it ? "
" Nah ... it's Kev's .... ???? "
Sash can't be tricked that easily and didn't believe him.
Stan did made it threw to the Sunday rounds on the board borrowed from Red
but the final was made up of
Cheyne, Simon, Albert and Matt.
congrats to the winners
