REMAX Bendalong Kneeboard Classic 13-15 March 2009 -

Wednesday, March 25, 2009 :

On the 13-15 March The Bendalong Kneeboard classic sponsored By Alan and Sharon Deadman owners of Remax realestate Agency Manyana - Bendalong was held and the K.S.V were well Represented at the event by Jim and Jill Brown Neil and Lyn Owen, Greg Budgen, Mark Jeffery, Anthony Jewell and Stan Kofoed.

On Friday 13th of March the Veterans Division of the event was held and we had 2 surfers representing us in this division. Neil Owen and El president Jim Brown this was the biggest division of the event next to the open with 24 competitors.

The swell on this day was the best and most consistent of the event with a 3 ft swell with the odd bigger sets suiting the vicco’s. Jim and Neil surfed well with some real radical turns smashing the waves to pieces and leaving a wake of poor souls behind them reducing there dreams of a finals birth to ashes… Go Vicco’s

Jim and Neil made it to the finals of the veterans with Jim collecting 4th and Neil 2nd just slightly missing out on first place by a bee’s dick.

Saturday 14th The Open Event Starts….

On the Saturday we had the start of the open event the swell had dropped to an inconsistent 2 ft with the odd 3 ft set and there was a big luck factor to play if you got the good waves that run you would get through other wise you would be struggling.

Anthony Jewell was one of the first Viccos in the open event and only managed to get one wave. He did get some awesome carves and bashes but struggled to get a second wave to back up his first and being that the heats are only 15 minuets and also that he was on an under buoyant board pushing 100kg of surfer did really well.

Thr rest of the crew got threw the first round with some great surfing wave selection and gut wrenching power reo,s that you could hear cracking from the beach. Jim Brown was especially stoked as this was the first time he had got through the first round of the open at Bendalong Pro Am

This left Jim, Neil, Greg, Mark and Stan to do battle with the rest of the field mainly coming from the east coast states of Australia that are use to these conditions.

The tide was getting fuller the swell decreasing in size and becoming more inconsistent Greg, Jim and Mark were surfing well and doing some great turns but the swell tap had been switched off on them and they could not get a good second wave to strengthen their scores and they had just missed out on getting through to the quarter finals.

Neil Owen was doing well catching a lot of good waves being at the right place at the right time reading the conditions well getting some beautifully controlled radical turns all the way to the beach, not many people could get to the beach on their waves. He just kept on turning and turning leaving his other competitors for dead and surprising him self .

Stan Kofoed was having a tuff heat with a pretty even heat .No one really catching any waves standing out. Then in the dying moments of the heat he lucked on to a right hander that A framed, he quickly got to the bottom of the wave drove it hard toward the lip and gave it a good old fashioned touch up off the lip with a thunderous crack in to a cutty, enough to give him first place in that heat and in just a nick of time.
So Neil and Stan were in to the quarters.

The open quarter Finals…

Stan and Neil were in to the Quarter finals with the swell getting smaller and onshore the conditions were getting tougher Stan heat was on first he paddled out and was looking for a peak the other competitors in his heat had all had a wave but being only 15 mins heats was starting to feel the pressure and took of on a couple of poor quality waves and within the last couple of minutes left in the heat only managed to get an average scoring wave Stan got 3rd in his heat and did not get to progress.

Neil Owen was in to his quarter final and was catching some great waves carving some high speed bottom turns and turning vertical with grace speed and power just ripping the tops out of these waves and blitzing the other notable competitors in his heat. Neil was on fire and no one could catch him he was in the zone and unstoppable Neal had made it to the semi his personal best result ever and he was stoked and well deserved.. Good on ya Neil

The Open Semi Final Sunday morning...

Neil Owen was in to the toughest heat of his life the swell had dropped to 1ft with the odd inconsistent 2 ft set. If you got the set waves they were good left handers but you had to be lucky enough to get one . Neil had paddled out and had got on to a good wave that he just tore the bags out of, but the wave tap got turned off on him and he could not get another wave for the remainder of the heat. If Neil had got one more good wave he would of made it to the open final. Well done Neil on your excellent result.

The age division results.

Tony Jewell, Mark Jefferys and Greg Budgen were in the grand masters with Toney and Mark in the first heat. There was some good competitive surfing in their heat with Mark progressing and Toney just narrowly missing out.

Greg budgen was ripping smashing the waves to pieces with a very aggressive attack and was a standout.

Greg and Mark made it to the semis of grand masters. Mark was in the first semi and had some good waves but needed a stronger scoring wave but being a so inconsistent gutless swell was having trouble finding that elusive wave and failed to progress.
Greg Budgen ripped in his semi with a powerful display of a vertical attack cracking lips all the way down the line and had progressed to the grand masters final.

Age division final.

Greg was in to the masters final and had caught only one wave. The swell had just about stopped and he did not get a chance to catch another wave and finished up 4th over all
Stan Kofoed made the masters final but also could only manage one good wave and a little dribbler but it was enough to get him 3rd in the final.
