The very un-official page from the kneeboard division of the WindanSea Boardrider’s Club

September Session

The competition was held on Father's Day Sunday the 7th. There were some were absentees due to family and other commitments, and so we had a smaller group than last month.
The shortboard divisions chose to go north to Currimundi so the kneelos had Ann Street Reef to ourselves or at least until the Sunday standups and lids came to  join the party.  Conditions were good with around 3 ft on sets and a light offshore breeze.

Held on Sunday the 7th which happened to be Father's Day. This did clash with a few  family and other  asscociated comittments, there were some were absentees and so we had a smaller group than last month.
The Main club chose to go to Currumundi so the kneelos had the Ann Street Reef ... or at least until the Sunday standups and lids came to make life difficult.
Conditions were good with around 3 ft on sets and a light offshore.

early morning saw the Ann St Reef  suprisingly quiet
but it wasn't by final time

Byron and Kev both going right - stuck in Granite mode from the long day before

On the preceding Saturday Byron and Kev went on a trek to A-Bay via the southern route. A-Bay wasn't that good as the swell size was a bit big for the tide and no banks were holding, so they ventured to Granite where the wind wasn't as favourable but it did seem to have a workable wave although very bumpy. They intended to head back to A-Bay for the higher tide but ended up doing two sessions of two hours + then had to walk all the way back to the southern side of the National Park lugging their gear, probably walking the best part of 10km.
This clearly showed as they were looked weary upon arrival and with aching limbs both did start well but faded fast.

Matt and his new equipment

Mat looked good on his new board with freshly fitted Squid Grip and got some nice lefts.

Daryl dropping into a sucky section and found a very nice line

Daryl was surfing well considering he was still recovering from a broken ankle. He charged a few late take offs and drops. Finished off one ride with a closeout re-entry, found the reef and broke a fin out. Despite making it through to the final Daryl retired for the day and installed himself as Head Judge.

The judges (well for this heat anyway)
Al, Daryl (Head Judge) and Byron

Anthony concentrated on the lefts. There were some long walled left handers.

Col was having a ball and found that Kev's advice about right hander was spot on. He dropped into one that pulled back in the early stages just right and then proceeded to wall up nicely, a series of top, bottom, cutback and again and again and again was one of the longest waves of the day and the peanut gallery (the judges) were heard hooting and cheering .. ' Wave of the Day '.

Col positioned himself well and picked up a lovely right that just looked after him ... all the way to the shore

The offshore hung in for the final but the Sunday crowd had arrived which made life harder. The early morning locals had given us a bit of room to move and even called a few kneelos into waves. thanks guys!.  By later in the morning the crew were more competitive with the odd drop-in.

Al went left and he went right, many times

Al had his family there as cheer squad and that coupled with good wave selection he also showed good consistency. He continued this form into the final making the most of what was on offer, even the small stuff and managed to find enough points to stay ahead of the others. Congratulations Al.

Al made good use of most waves that came his way

The Crew

Well done to all. Final results were :

1st - Al
2nd - Anthony
3rd - Col
4th - Kev

With a successful event over some of use stuck around for a free surf.

According to the grapevine Mat took his jet ski out to Mudjimba Island that afternoon. Turns out he had it all by himself and got lonely !!. Should have taken him up on his offer. Next time I will!

The crew appreciated Byron’s and Kev’s camera work.
