The WindanSea kneeboard
division assembled on the morning of Sunday 8th November to find very
small but clean waves. Ann Street Reef was already crowded so we
decided to try Currimundi.
WindanSea’s November comp is by tradition ‘Champion’s Day’ with a
trophy for the winner and double points up for grabs which adds spice
to as we approach the end of the season.
All agreed that the small beachbreaks near the lake’s mouth waves were
contestable. It was pretty clean for the two heats and short reasonable
rides were on offer but as the swell was intermittent we decided to run
25 minute heats. Daryl and Mick took out Byron and Anthony in the first
heat, length of ride was key as the small waves made hard turns a risky
proposition.
The second heat saw Luke dominate and scored the best wave of the day
executing a nice floater as the small lefthander shut down. Col surfed
well to clinch second with Al and Brian destined to surf off for the
minor placings with Byron and Anthony.
Unfortunately the wind then swung pretty quickly to a hard cross-shore
after the heats which cleared the water of all sensible surfers. It was
now small and pretty much blown out. The surf off for the
minor placings wasn’t much of a spectacle however Byron took it out
with Al and Anthony tied for second or is that third? There was very
little separating Brian in fourth spot.
Luke surfed well to take out the final with good wave selection and the
ability to maintain speed under difficult conditions. Daryl worked hard
for second and Mick continued on his steady form from his heat and took
out third. Col was a bit unlucky to knock a fin out of his new Parkes
on the sandbar after about 10 minutes and graciously declined offers of
replacement boards.
Those who could hung around for coffee and morning tea. We all wished
Mick well as he was heading off on the drive south to the Phillip
Island Classic.
Only the December comp to go now and hopefully better conditions as we
start to move into a more reliable swell window in our summer months.
