August Session

Originally scheduled for Sunday the 10th but was postponed due to lack of swell.

After weeks of zero waves, a small swell had finally arrived on the Friday arvo and provided some fun clean waves along the Currimundi and Wurtulla stretch.  Anthony and Kev had an enjoyable late Saturday arvo session at Firetail and things were looking good for Sunday.

So, we mustered early on the 17th at the Ann Street Reef to view what was on offer.  The short board divisions of the club elected to surf the reef so we though a short drive north to Currimundi Lake would provide ok waves, parking and a chance for a hot coffee.

Daryl , Anthony, Luke, Scott and Mick

We set up right near the lake inlet in front of some possible lefts and rights with a slight off-shore. Good, clean, but small conditions. Some said it was cold but I think it was just - refreshing. We had a good turn-out of 9 entries organised into 3 first round rounds of 3.

After some juggling we ended up with a two 2nd round heats culminating in a 4 man final.

Kev praying for a barrel that never came
( Don't wait, just hit the lip! )

The early heats went well in clean but small waves that combined with the offshore were quite hard to catch and once you did the trick was to make them look bigger that they were. Luke the small wave master focused on the long ride to the beach. Not so much the big turn that could leave you without a wave. Daryl was still getting over the foot injury from earlier this year but did get off to a good start but seemed to cool off ... or was that just that the water was cold ?  Mat did not feel the cold and was just looking plain cool in just a pair of boardies.  Scott had been out of the water for some time so was a little rusty but did join Kev in a paddling competition to find out who can paddle further without catching a wave ?

But when Scotty did find a wave he made the most of it

Luke who had been making the most of the small conditions kept picking up the choice waves and moved through his two heats with ease.
Mick said he was heading to hospital that week for an operation on his thyroid.  I don't even know what a thyroid is. Good news is he’s fine and has a big scar to prove it.

Anthony was into the final directly following his 2nd heat , with only a very short rest period, which didn't seem all that fair as he looked spent.

Kev still hunting for a wave that never came and an unknown Kneelo lost in the white water.
( Someone said to was Kev ... but I don't believe them ... Kev can't do things like that. )

The final was in onshore conditions as the wind swung almost on cue for the final. Not an easy time finding a takeoff and even harder to make the most of the wave. Wave selection was the key and Luke chose wisely. He continued to make the most of what was on offer and won the final convincingly. Scott changed strategy as the waves became more scarce and harder to manage but found some late waves that offered a few sections in which he scored some points. Kev just kept looking for the big wave full of points that never came and then his wave selection went out the window and paddled into anything but the judges where not overly impressed by double cutbacks in the white water.  Anthony’s careful selection of closeouts did not pay dividends.

Well done to all. Final results were :

1st - Luke
2nd - Scott
3rd - Kev
4th - Anthony

but everyone was a winner as we had a good time and then stopped off at the nearby coffee shop for eggs, bacon and breakfast burgers ... oh ! and coffee.

Thanks for the pictures Byron
